IN THE QUIET CYCLES OF THE FULL MOON, I FOUND A WAY TO RECONNECT WITH PHOTOGRAPHY AT ITS MOST ELEMENTAL. STRIPPING AWAY THE TRADITIONAL TOOLS OF THE MEDIUM, I WORKED WITH MOONLIGHT AND PHOTOGRAPHIC PAPER TO CREATE ABSTRACT COLOR FIELD IMAGES THAT BOTH REJECT ARTIFICE AND CELEBRATE NATURE’S ESSENCE.
THIS PROCESS BECAME A RITUAL GUIDED BY THE CELESTIAL RHYTHM OF THE MOON. EACH PHOTOGRAPH A DIRECT IMPRINT OF NATURE, SHAPED BY THE UNIQUE CONDITIONS OF THE NIGHT IT WAS CREATED. THERE IS NO TRADITIONAL LENS, NO CAMERA—ONLY LIGHT, TIME, AND THE TRANSFORMATIVE ALCHEMY OF THE PHOTOGRAPHIC PROCESS.
IN THIS QUEST TO STRIP PHOTOGRAPHY TO ITS PUREST FORM, THE RESULTS STAND AS SOMETHING WHOLLY OTHER—IMAGES THAT ARE ESSENTIALLY ANTI-PHOTOGRAPHS. THEY REJECT THE CONVENTIONAL ROLES OF THE MEDIUM, OFFERING NO SUBJECT, NO NARRATIVE, AND NO CONSTRUCTED REALITY. INSTEAD, THEY ARE VISCERAL ABSTRACTIONS, UNMEDIATED BY TRADITIONAL TOOLS AND CREATED BY EMBRACING LIGHT’S INHERENT UNPREDICTABILITY.
THE RESULTING IMAGES CHALLENGE CONVENTIONAL NOTIONS OF PHOTOGRAPHY. THEY ARE AT ONCE INVITING AND ELUSIVE, DRAWING THE VIEWER INTO A SPACE WHERE THE ABSENCE OF RECOGNIZABLE FORMS BECOMES A MEDITATION ON THE PRESENCE OF SOMETHING MORE PROFOUND: THE PURE AND UNMEDIATED RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LIGHT AND MATTER.
IN EMBRACING THE UNKNOWN AND RELINQUISHING CONTROL, I SOUGHT TO DISTILL PHOTOGRAPHY TO ITS CORE—A TANGIBLE IMPRINT OF THE UNIVERSE, LARGELY UNSHAPED BY HUMAN HANDS BUT DEEPLY TIED TO A SHARED HUMAN EXPERIENCE. NOCTURNAL LIGHT INVITES VIEWERS TO ENCOUNTER THIS DUALITY, TO EMBRACE THE CHALLENGE AND BEAUTY OF LETTING GO, AND TO SEE THE WORLD ANEW THROUGH THE SIMPLEST AND MOST PROFOUND LANGUAGE OF LIGHT.
